Electric vehicle owners can get a fast, free charge at Palm Desert's Civic Center Park during both weekends of the Coachella Music Arts Festival thanks to #ChargeUp!

The free charging event at the park's DC Fast Charger begins at noon Thursday (April 13) and continues throughout Coachella's first weekend until midnight Sunday, April 16. Free charging will also be available the second weekend of Coachella from 12:01 a.m. on Friday, April 21, until midnight Sunday, April 23.

A welcome event from noon until 6 p.m. on Thursday, April, 13, will include refreshments and music.

Electric vehicle owners in Palm Desert can now charge more quickly and conveniently than ever before, thanks to the installation of the new DC Fast Charger at Civic Center Park.

Instead of the six to eight hours it takes to fully charge a vehicle using the more common Level 2 chargers, most electric vehicles can fully charge in 40 minutes at a DC Fast Charger. The DC Fast Charger costs $9.95 per use.

As part of California’s campaign to install 20 DC Fast Chargers across the state, the City partnered with the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD), Clean Fuel Connection, Inc., and NRG/eVgo to install the new charger using grant funds to pay for the project.

The new DC Fast Charger expands on the City’s already extensive alternative fuel infrastructure, which includes four Level 2 electric vehicle chargers at Civic Center Park and eight other Level 2 chargers located throughout the community.

Palm Desert’s installation of electric vehicle chargers helps the California Energy Commission (CEC) achieve its goals of establishing alternative fuel infrastructure. As the number of alternative fuel vehicles grows, the need for alternative fuel infrastructure also increases.

Alternative fuel vehicles also reduce greenhouse gas emissions and contribute to better air quality and a healthier environment.

Civic Center Park is located at 73510 Fred Waring Drive (northeast corner of Fred Waring and San Pablo Avenue.
